So the maintainers that got the boot were working for sanctioned Russian organizations (or at least, could not prove that their particular employers were not under the broad OFAC sanctions regime).
Totally reasonable for the Kernel maintainers who largely live in US/EU to do this, it's hard enough working on open source without worrying about ending up in jail.
